Getting Around Milan: Metro, Tickets and the Airports

Updated:

The cloister of the science museum: a cream-coloured building with an arcade lit by warm light on the left, and a bell tower and a domed drum rising behind the roofs under a cloudy sky.

Short answer. In central Milan the metro connects the six sights: the M1 and M3 stop at Duomo, the M1 and M2 at Cadorna (for the Last Supper and the castle), and the M2 and M4 at Sant’Ambrogio (for the Science Museum). An ordinary ticket lasts 90 minutes from the first validation; the current fares are on the ATM website (atm.it). From Malpensa the Malpensa Express runs to the centre; from Linate the M4 reaches the centre; from Orio al Serio shuttle buses go to Centrale. The details come from the pages of ATM, Trenord and the museums, read on 24 October 2026. Works and strikes change timetables, so check before you travel.

Which stop for which sight

Sight Metro Surface lines named by the sight
Duomo M1 and M3 at Duomo none read
Last Supper M1 at Cadorna or Conciliazione; M2 at Cadorna Tram 16 at Santa Maria delle Grazie; buses 50 and 169 at Via Boccaccio
Sforza Castle M1 at Cairoli or Cadorna FN; M2 at Lanza or Cadorna FN Trams 1, 2, 4, 12 and 14; buses 50, 57, 58 and 85
Brera M2 at Lanza; M3 at Montenapoleone; M1 at Cairoli Buses 61 and 57; trams 1, 2, 12 and 14 (Via Cusani) and 4 (Lanza)
Science Museum M2 and M4 at Sant’Ambrogio Bus 50 (stop Museo della Scienza); buses 96 and 97 at Sant’Ambrogio
La Scala museum none given by the museum none given

The castle’s page puts Cairoli 200 m and Lanza 240 m from the entrance. The La Scala museum lists no stops: the cathedral is about 395 m from it in a straight line (our calculation; we did not measure from the station). The Science Museum’s text on bus 50 is a single run-on line, so check the route with ATM.

The lines and their hours

The network has five lines: M1 (opened on 1 November 1964), M2 (27 September 1969), M3 (3 May 1990), M5 (10 February 2013) and M4 (26 November 2022, whole line open from 12 October 2024). ATM publishes timetables by stop, not by line. At Duomo, from 31 August 2026, the first M1 and M3 trains leave between about 5:54 and 6:02 on weekdays and Saturdays, and between 6:14 and 6:34 on holidays; the last leave between 0:34 and 0:39. The M4 runs daily from early morning to about 00:30, with night bus NM4 afterwards. Its stations have lifts and escalators, and it connects with the M1 at San Babila, the M2 at Sant’Ambrogio and the M3 at Sforza-Policlinico.

Tickets and fares

Ticket Valid
Ordinary single ticket (Mi1 to Mi3) 90 minutes from first validation
Daily 24 hours
3 days until 03:45 of the third day
Book of 10 tickets each 90 minutes; not for several people at once

ATM sets the fares and can change them: check the current ones on the ATM website (atm.it).

They are valid on all ATM lines, on the M1, M3, M4 and M5 from end to end, and on Trenord trains in the zone. Under-14s travel free with a document. You buy them in the ATM app, at the machines in the metro stations or at newsstands, and validate them at the turnstiles when entering and leaving. ATM reports strikes and changes at InfoTraffico.

From Malpensa

The Malpensa Express of Trenord links Terminals 1 and 2 with Centrale, Porta Garibaldi and Cadorna, with a train every 15 minutes from 4:00 to 2:00 according to its site; another Trenord page lists fewer runs, so check the timetable. The single ticket is valid for one day from the chosen train and needs no validation. The official pages give about 51 minutes to Centrale and about 37 to Cadorna, and they are not consistent about the terminal, so take both as approximate.

Two cards list Malpensa Express single tickets, one for each direction, read on 24 October 2026. They list a mobile ticket, “no limits on luggage” and a replacement bus if a strike cancels the train, and they cannot be cancelled. They also mention first class and give 57 minutes as the journey time, so read the card for what the ticket covers. The two cards have 48 reviews (average 4.0). A third card offers a shuttle bus between Malpensa and Centrale (233 reviews, average 4.4).

Until 12 December 2026 Trenord has works at Centrale: a few very early Malpensa trains are replaced by buses to Porta Garibaldi, and some evening trains end there. Works between Saronno and Castellanza (to 30 October 2026, weekday nights) change some trains, and Porta Garibaldi has works from 21 October to 19 December. Read Trenord’s notices before you travel.

Linate and Orio al Serio

The M4 serves Linate, and the ordinary ticket is enough. We could not read the airport’s page on buses, so we give none. For Orio al Serio, the Science Museum’s page names the shuttles Orio Shuttle, Autostradale and Terravision to Centrale, then the M2 (six stops to Sant’Ambrogio); we did not verify prices, times or durations, and there is no card for Bergamo.

From the stations

From Centrale the M3 reaches the Duomo in four stops. From Cadorna the M1 does it in three, passing Cairoli and Cordusio. We found no travel times for these rides.

The cards below carry the details we read on 24 October 2026.

How much is a ticket for the Milan metro?

ATM sells an ordinary single ticket for Milan and the nearby Mi1 to Mi3 zones, valid for 90 minutes from the first validation, a 24-hour ticket, a 3-day ticket and a book of 10 tickets. The fares are ATM’s official prices and can change, so we do not quote them: see the current ones on the ATM website (atm.it).

Can I pay for the metro with a contactless bank card?

Yes, on ATM lines: you tap the same card or phone on entering and leaving the turnstile, with no registration. One card carries one passenger, and from the fourth journey the day fare is charged. It does not work on the S lines or on Trenord trains. ATM names Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro and VPay, and not Postepay cards issued by VISA or PagoBancomat-only cards.

How do I get from Malpensa to the Duomo?

Take the Malpensa Express. To Cadorna it takes about 37 minutes, and from there the M1 reaches the Duomo in three stops. To Centrale it takes about 51 minutes, and the M3 reaches the Duomo in four stops. The metro part has no time on the pages we read. Check Trenord’s works notices first.

How do I get from Linate to the centre?

By the M4: ATM says it takes 12 minutes from the centre to Linate, with the ordinary ticket. For the Duomo, change at San Babila to the M1; the Duomo is the next stop. We have not timed the whole journey.
